In this guide we go into greater details on how to iron your pants efficiently and correctly. Below are the summary of steps to follow with more explanations below:-

  1. Get Your Iron Ready
  2. Iron the Pocket Linings
  3. Iron Waist Band & Top Part
  4. Mark Trouser Crease at Bottom
  5. Mark Creases at Top
  6. Press The Front Crease & Trouser Leg

1. Get Your Iron Ready

First get your iron ready. Fill it up with some distilled water. When you’re ironing a blended fabric like you see in dress pants choose the lowest or coolest setting of the two fabrics.

For example, if you’re ironing a 70% wool/polyester blend you would start with the 3 and maybe go to a 4. Lower temperatures will take longer to set a crease but they’re less likely to damage your pants.

2. Iron the Pocket Linings

Most dress trousers have inside pocket linings and although no one will ever see them even if they are severely wrinkled and you wear your trousers close fitted and impression the wrinkles might be visible so to prevent this smooth out the lining

3. Iron the Waist Band & Top Part of Trouser

Turn the front pockets out and then press the iron on the top of the leg. Lift the iron up, reinsert the pocket and continue to press along the top of the trouser, paying special attention to the pleats and
reforming any folds.

Remember when you’re ironing dress pants you do not want to push it along you, want to press and lift, press and lift. Pushing the iron along can cause the pants to get those shiny marks that look really bad.

Move to the seat of the trousers and pull out the back pockets and do the press and lift motion and then move to the waistband

4. Mark Trouser Crease At Bottom

Mark the trouser crease at the bottom then lay your trousers on the ironing board flat with the cuffs right at one end and the waist draped over the far end. Arrange the trouser legs so that one inseam lies right on top of the other dead center of the flat leg within seams in the center the edges of the trouser leg are where you want to press the crease.

Spray the cuff with a bit of water and press down gently on each side of the trouser leg. This should leave a visible crease at the cuff and an inch or two up the leg.

5. Mark Creases at The Top

Find the same two vertical inseams and match them up one on top of the other just like you did above with the bottom crease but this time at the top of the pants. Lay the top of the trouser leg flat with inseam centered what they oughta edge of the trouser leg and use the iron to gently press a crease into place along that edge about six inches down from the waist band.

6. Press The Front Crease & Trouser Leg

Now that you’ve got a start and finish of the crease on marked it’s just a matter of connecting the dots. If the end seams are still one atop of the other, the crease should be the very edge of the trouser leg as it lies flat.

Press gently down in one spot with the iron then lift the iron and move it up a bit then do it again, always pressing straight down rather than pushing and sliding along the crease.

Repeat the same process used to create the front crease to create a back crease. Again press down gently to set the crease in place and then lifting the iron back up again. Press down the trouser leg.

Once you’ve got your creases set you can press the center of the trouser leg between the creases to get out any small wrinkles or folds. Use the same motion you’ve been using ie press the iron flat, pick it back up and repeat again a little further along.

You want to repeat the forming the crease and then pressing the trouser leg on the other leg. And that’s how you iron dress pants

The above article is a transcript from the video below from The Art of Manliness.

Ironing Khakis

With khakis you can use a higher heat setting because khakis are made of cotton and also because khaki are a casual pant meaning you can iron them without a crease in the front so just go ahead and iron
the fronts flat which makes life easy not too worried about lining that creases.

Here is a step by step guide on how to iron a dress shirt properly. Enjoy. Work has been transcripted from the Art of Manliness Video.

1. Read the Shirt Label

You really need to do this step because you have to understand what type of fabric the shirt is made of before ironing it or you could possibly destroy it.

2. Prepare The Iron

Ensure the iron has water in it and then plug it in and set it to the lowest heat setting that you will need.

3. Check for Stains

If you have a shirt that has a stain, the heat from the iron can set the stain making it hard to remove later so always give your shirts a good check before you apply the iron to the shirt.

4. Moisten the Shirt

This will enable you to dry iron without having to worry about your iron’s steam function. The easiest way to get a moist shirt is to simply pull the shirt out of the dryer before it’s completely dry.

If your shirt is already dried, moisten it with a spray bottle and keep that spray bottle by you throughout the ironing process so you can dampen the shirt if necessary.

5. Iron the Collar

If your shirt has collar stays remove those first. Iron the underside of the collar first slowly pressing the iron from one point of the collar to the other. Flip your shirt over and repeat on the outside of your collar

6. Iron Shirt Cuffs

Unbutton one cuff including the gauntlet button (which is that button about a quarter way up the sleeve). First you want to iron the inside of the cuff and then move on to the outside. When you get to the buttons you want to carefully iron around those because you don’t want to iron over buttons because that can leave a mark.

You also need to repeat this on the other cuff. For French cuffs you just want to open the cuff fully and it’s recommended that you don’t press the edges of a French cuff because it steals the life and body from a smooth fold.

7. Iron Shirt Front

Start with the size that has the buttons and carefully work the iron point around the button area but again never iron over the button. Move back up to the top of the shoulder and work your way down the shirt with the iron.

Repeat this process on the other side and if you have a placket (which is that material that goes down the length of your shirt) press the material under the placket with the iron point and then over the top. It’s also good to spend a bit more time on the front placket in areas near the collar as they receive a high percentage of visual attention

8. Iron the Yoke

The yoke is the fabric on the back of the shirt right underneath the collar that spans with your shoulders. You iron that by pressing from one point of the yoke to the other.

9. Iron Back of Your Shirt

Start at the top, meet the yoke and slowly slide the iron down. If you have a sinner box pleat, you’ll have to spend a few seconds ironing around it.

10. Iron Sleeves

Sleeves are tricky because unless you have a sleeve board, you will be ironing two layers of fabric at the same time. The key to ironing sleeves is to be sure the fabric is flat and smooth before you apply the iron or you get messed up creases.

Take either sleeve by the seam and lay the whole sleeve and most of the shirt flat on the ironing board. If you can see the creases on the top of the sleeve from the previous ironing match it again so that you have a single crease line. Start ironing at the top where the sleeve is sewn into the shirt and work your way down to the cuff.

Turn the sleeve over and iron on the other side then repeat the process with the other sleeve.

11. Inspect and Hang

Inspect the shirt and spot iron where necessary. Finally place the shirt on a hanger as soon as you can so it doesn’t get wrinkly.

Final Tips

Iron shirts in batches. Ironing actually just takes a few minutes but half of that time is taken up with preparation like getting the ironing board out, warming up your iron, filling it up with water etc so use your time more effectively by ironing all your shirts in one batch instead of whenever you need one.

If you are in a hurry and you’re planning on wearing a jacket that day you can get away with just ironing only your collar, the front area right below the collar and your cuffs.

If you literally have no time to iron then at least throw the shirt in the dryer while you throw on the rest of your clothing. Five minutes of stumbling in the warm air will help loosen some of the worst wrinkles.

Finally you can always use starch as an option that will give you a nice crisp shirt but you got to be careful don’t apply too much because it can really get stiff.

Well that’s how to iron a dress shirt so now you have no more excuses for looking like a schlub

In this blog post I will be reviewing some of the popular portable clothes dryer on sale in the market that can be used in small or big apartments, RVs, when you travel or even camping. I have reviewed 3 portable clothes dryers. Of these 3, two are ventless while one requires a vent. These are:-

  1. Panda Ventless Dryer
  2. Manatee Clothes Dryer
  3. Panda Portable Dryer

1. Panda Portable Ventless Clothes Dryer

This portable dryer is ventless and has been designed to gently dry your clothes using warm air that is passed through the clothes using an air motor. The manufacturer also claims that it helps minimizes
the appearance of wrinkles on your clothes.

The dimensions of this dryer are 9.5” x 11.2” x 21” and it weighs about 8.5 pounds. It can hold up to 22 pounds of garments. The folding clothes rack has the ability to hold upto 18 hangers. Its cover opens and closes through a zipper and is made of heat-insulated material.

It is easy to assemble this dryer. Simply hang the clothes and set the timer dial, cover the clothes with thee tube cover, start the motor and let the warm air dry the clothes. You can set the timer to an hr,half an hour or even 20 minutes depending on what you want.

The package content include:- The clothes rack, upper support pole, support pole connector, lower support pole, waterproof protection plate, heater, heat insulated tube cover, dryer legs.

The voltage of the air motor is 110v and the maximum drying time is about 180 mins. This dryer is perfect for people living in apartments, dorms or who travel using RVs.

This portable dryer takes a little longer to dry clothes compared to the time taken by a normal dryer.

PROS
– Compared to going to a laundromat, you will save a lot of money in the long run
– Easy to assemble and fits well in small spaces
– Does not consume a lot of energy compared to normal dryer
– Although ventless, it doesn’t heat up the room. It’s absolutely silent and safe
– Allows you to dry clothes that you wouldn’t be able to place inside a regular dryer. Clothes that will shrink in a regular dryer will not do so with this one.

CONS
– Some people are complaining that it takes too long (more than 180 mins) to dry their clothes. Could it be for people living in more humid towns will naturally take more time to dry?

2. Manatee Portable Drying Rack

This clothes drying rack is designed for people living in tight spaces such as apartments, RVs and also for business travelers. It is a ventless drying rack and is able to hold bulky items without sacrificing on its performance. The maximum drying time for this dryer is 240 minutes and has been designed to fold a maximum of 33 pounds.

It comes with a remote control that works within a range of 8 meters. This drying rack can also be controlled by a LCD touch screen. The temperature control function controls the fan from overheating to
ensure safety in your home.

It also has a -ve ions function whose main purpose is to sanitize clothes against issues such as pollen, mold, dust, pet dander, spores, cigarette smoke etc. The electrical consumption of this dryer is 110v and uses a normal three prong plug.

Manatee Dryer Video

PROS
– A convenient, durable and innovative product.
– Its on wheels which makes it easy to move around
– Energy and eco conscious
– Saves you space and can be stored under the bed or in the closet
– The shut off timer function is great especially if you want to dry overnight or want to leave your house

CONS
– This product height is about 4.5 ft which is short. So if you have long garments such as towels thy might touch the floor.

3. Panda 2.65 cu.ft Portable Laundry Dryer

This is a conventional dryer but I included it because its portable due to its small size. It has a capacity to hold a maximum of 8.8lbs cloth. You can use it to dry clothes and other types of garments. I don’t think this is appropriate for camping but can fit well in small apartments or small spaces at home.

It runs on 110 volts with a rated input of 1400w/800w and its perfect for apartments and other small spaces. Since it runs on 110v, it might take a little longer to dry your clothes compared to a 220v dryer.

It has 4 temperature selections to choose from and its dimensions are 23.62″ x 17.12″ x 27.56″ (W * D * H). In every purchase you get wall mounting brackets to use, a removable lint filter and 1 year
warranty.

The machine weighs 44 pounds and is white in color and comes with a 1 year manufacture warranty. Its weight is portable enough to move it around or take it with you in an RV or camping trip.

Would you need to vent with this dryer? Well that depends. If you are the type of person that is not comfortable with a lot of humidity in your house or room, then I would suggest you have this set up.

The challenge of not venting is that mildew will develop over time. One user said that when using an indoor venting kit, the humidity in the room jumped by 30% when the dryer was being used. The vent
is about 3 1/2″ in diameter & has plastic vent tubing

If you find that this dryer is leaking water, probably its because its clogged with lint. when overloaded, this dryer give a high pitched noise otherwise its silent when loaded properly.

PROS
– Does not use a lot of electricity.
– One user commented and said they have used it to dry 4 big towels in a decent amount of time. The person added that they have also dried a sheet, fitted sheet, and 4 pillow cases in under 30 minutes
– Silent when properly loaded

CONS
– Its was never designed to dry heavy loads at a time or garments that still hold water. So for people who like to dry huge loads at a time, this is not for you

Dryer Fires Prevention

Most people are ignorant of operating dryers in a safe manner. Did you know that there are over 15000 fires, 10 injuries and 10 deaths that are caused by dryers every year? Its also reported that there are several hundred people per year who are poisoned by carbon monoxide from improper dryer safety measures.

The financial implication of these problems runs to $100,000,000 per year. To be fare, some accidents are caused by faulty dryers but on the other hand, many of these fires can be avoided with proper dryer safety precautions.

When there is an accumulation of lint coupled with reduced airflow feed, this create the optimal condition for fires to occur. Lint is a material that easily catches fire. Did you know that lint is one of the ingredients found in a recipe for home-made fire starters?

In most homes, clothes dryers are normally placed in the basement. With the increasing house demand for apartments, its not uncommon to find many houses to have dryers located away from outside wall in bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and hall closets.

Placing dryers in these locations will mean that they will have to be vented longer distances. To add to the challenge, these same vents are in most cases installed with sharp turns and bends to accommodate the structure of the house. This creates a problem where dryer vents are harder to reach & more surfaces for lint to gather.

Short, straight dryer duct venting is recommended. If this is not possible, then a dryer vent booster (though not ideal), can considerably improve your dryer venting where your venting is longer and/or
has more bends than it should.

In addition to creating a fire hazard, if the venting is too long and/or has two many bends, it will cause your dryer to take much longer than necessary to dry loads.

Within The Dryer

Like we mentioned before, the biggest problem is lint. If you’ve ever cleaned your lint filter, you will notice that it catches a lot of lint. The general assumption is that lint filters will trap all the lint & they
need to do is clean them with each load.

This is not the case because a good amount of lint escapes and is not caught within the filters and over time it builds up (even on the heating element itself) causing it to overheat and catch fire.

For those that are doubting, I would ask you go to your dryer and remove the lint trap & check underneath it. Don’t be surprised to discover big mounds of lint hidden within!

Outside the Dryer

Some technicians employ improper dryer vent practices which can result in fire accidents in the long run. Some of these common dryer vent mistakes are:-

1. When the vents are installed in buildings and have long or too many bends, with inferior or no dryer duct booster. This results in lint buildup. We recommend shorter dryer vents.

2. Installing flammable or foil duct extenders. Make sure that ONLY metal vents are installed, which is what is recommended. The reason we recommend metal vents is that they are able to resist being crushed better than plastic or foil, which in turn allows the lint and warm air to be expelled out efficiently.

When the flow of air is reduced will result in overheating and the effect is that it causes clothes to wear out and the appliance to break down faster.

3. Small clearance space between the dryer and the wall. When you place the dryer right against the wall, you can destroy the venting material in the process and causing overheating. Overheating causes the high temperature safety switch to to go on and off. Since these switches were not designed to switch on and off frequently, they break down over time.

4. Failure to clean the dryer duct properly.

Preventing Water Damage in the Laundry Room

Most people normally put the washer and drier in their laundry rooms. These machines do produce heat and moisture and as such, you need to do maintenance that will help prevent mold from building up and other water related problems.

Below are quick to understand guidelines that will give you great tips and indications for potential problems that can be caused by utility sinks, washers, dryers and filters.

The Washer

The washer is normally connected to the hot and cold water sources. We advise that you check them from time to time. You can start by checking the joints and if you find a leak, fix it. Dont forget to check both ends of the water lines.

Its a good idea to replace the filters once in a while. When a filter is blocked, it slow the water movement into the washing machine which can end up in serious malfunctions. This is especially worse in households that are supplied with hard water.

Open and inspect the shut off valve by searching for drips into the washing machine while you are not using it. Should you notice a leak, we recommend you replace the valve ASAP.

Hoses & Filters

In many appliances, problems do often start inside the hose. We recommend that you you keep at least 4 inches between the water connection and the back of the washer. What this does is stop the hose from kinking itself and bursting as a result.

If the hoses are old, replace them. A better replacement would be to buy and install steel-braided hoses.

The Dryer

The dryer is another component that needs to be checked. It is connected to a ventilation hose. Make sure that the dryer ventilation hose is connected to the outdoors.

Check it carefully and look out for lint behind & under the dryer and also make sure that there is no clogging on the vent pipe. Also ensure that the exhaust is as short as possible for the dryer to vent efficiently,

Utility Sink

Lastly, do check the utility sink. In some instances, this is the trigger for water related problems. Look out for leaks under the sink. If you do notice dripping of water under the sink, fix it immediately as this can be a bad sign of problems you will face and as such should be repaired immediately.

If you notice slow draining pipes, this may indicate that the there is a partially blocked drain. A faucet that is dripping all the time should be repaired ASAP.

Another thing that you need to do is check the sink seals and if there are cracked or loose, replace them. If you notice damp or stained walls around your plumbing pipes, fix them before more damage occurs. Stained walls indicate that there are internal leaks.

In this short guide I will be sharing tips on how to remove wax from your clothes.

To be on the safe side, consider the type of fabric you are working with before you attempt to use the method wax removal method for all materials. Of course, there are methods that work on all types of fabrics, but there are others that require heat and steam, which can damage delicate materials like silk.

As such, it is better when you find a method that removes wax on the specific fabric you have. The care symbols on your garment ought to guide you when dealing with delicate garments.

This method works for all types of fabrics. The amount of heat used should be low, and you must have a paper towel over the fabric while applying heat.

Below are the steps.

Give the wax spill a few minutes to dry. If you attempt to scrape it off when it is still wet, it will spread over the surface very fast and you’ll be dealing with a bigger mess.

Give it time to harden, which will also make your work easier. However, if you are already late and need to remove the wax fast, you can press some ice cubes over the wax to harden it.

Scrape off the wax using the back of a knife or another blunt object. The type of fabric should guide you on the amount of force needed to scrape wax. If you are dealing with light fabrics, be careful or you might stretch the material when you apply too much force.

Be gentle as you work on the garment to avoid tears or getting the object caught up in the fiber. Take your time, starting from the edges of the wax inwards.

Lay the garment on an ironing board. Place a paper towel over and another one under the wax. You can use blotting papers too. Place a clean cloth over the paper towel on top of the garment.

The purpose is to steam the wax and make it stick to the paper towels. The piece of cloth will protect the fabric and also increase moisture under the paper towels. The trapped moisture will cause the wax to melt.

Heat an iron, and apply the heat to the area above the wax. This will remove the wax left behind after you scrapped off. When using heat, take note of the type of fabric you are ironing.

Keep the heat low, and press the paper towel gently without staying in one section very long. After a few rounds of ironing over the paper towel, the wax will melt and transfer to the towels.

Remove the piece of cloth and the paper towels. Check for any traces of wax on the garment. If there is wax, repeat the process. If it’s spotless, leave it on the ironing board or hang it to let it dry.

Wear it or wash it the normal way along with other garments. Overall, removing wax should take you about half an hour or one hour.

Your morning can change from good to bad in minutes when you get lipstick all over your garment. If the garment is a dark colour such as black or the color of your lipstick, you can proceed with the day’s activities without a wardrobe change.

However, if the lipstick stain is visible, you need to take care of it or get another outfit altogether. Ideally, don’t leave the stain on for long; remove the stain while it’s still fresh. Here’s what to do to get lipstick off your clothes.

  1. Use alcohol

Scrape the lipstick off your garment with a blunt object such as the back of a knife. Scraping prevents smudges over another section of the garment as you clean the stain. Additionally, scraping the excess also makes it easier to remove the stain underneath.

Wet a clean piece of cloth or a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol. Test the fabric by dabbing an inconspicuous section with the cotton ball. If there is no visible damage on the fabric, work on the stain.

Dab the cotton ball on the stain without applying too much force. If you rub it, the stain will set and spread. You can start around the edges towards the center of the stain.

Rinse the garment in cold water to remove traces of the alcohol and the lipstick. Wash the garment the normal way if the stain removal process was a pre-wash procedure.

2. Use dish washing soap or laundry detergent

These two are perhaps the most readily available solutions when you want to act fast. They are also safe to use on various fabrics unlike bleaching agents that damage fabrics when used in large amounts.

The soap works because it break downs oil which is one of the main ingredients in lipstick. Here’s what to do.

  • Lay a clean piece of cloth or paper napkin over the working surface.
  • Next, lay the stained garment on the cloth with the stain in direct contact with the cloth/paper napkin. On the back of the garment, since the stain is facing down, dab a generous amount of soap.
  • Give it about 10 minutes to penetrate the fiber then blot the stain out with a damp, clean fabric. As you blot the stain gently, the paper napkin absorbs the water and lipstick residue.
  • Change the napkin severally so that the stain does not spread as you blot.
  • When all traces of the lipstick fade away, wash the garment the normal way.

3. Use Hairspray

Get a hairspray with high alcohol content so it can be effective as quickly as possible. Spray the stain area generously and leave it for about 10 minutes.

Dab the stain residue off using a damn piece of cloth. Wash the garment the normal way.

When choosing a method to use, consider the type of fabric you have so that the materials used do not damage the garment. Additionally, always test the corrosiveness of the materials, and also read the manufacturer’s care symbols on the garment.

In this short guide i’m going to teach you how to get chewing gum of jeans. When chewing gum sticks on your best pair of jeans, you don’t have to stash it in the garbage bin. There are easy, quick ways to remove gum without leaving a tear on your jeans.

Here are two solutions that work fast.

  1. Freezing The Gum

Ice cubes are readily available in your home. They can help you take that gum off jeans in a few minutes. Here’s the procedure.

Freeze the gum

When frozen, gum hardens and you can yank it off without ripping your jeans apart. The easiest way to freeze the gum is stashing the jeans in a freezer. It will not only freeze the gum but also freeze the area around it so that you can pull off the gum without tearing the fabric.

To freeze it, place the jeans in a plastic paper bag. The area with the gum should not fold into the garment or it will stick somewhere else. Let the jeans stay in the freezer for about two hours.

If you don’t want to put your jeans in a freezer, use ice cubes. Ice hardens the gum and also adds moisture that makes it easy for you to rip the gum off the fabric.

Stuff a considerable number of ice cubes in a polythene bag. Place the plastic bag on the chewing gum and let it stay there for about half an hour.

Scrape it

Use the back of a knife or another blunt object to scrape the frozen gum off the jeans. Work along the grain of the fabric, and start from the edges of the gum. Scrape gently without pulling the material too much. If you’ve frozen it properly, the gum should scrape off easily.

Brush it

Remove any remaining pieces of the gum on the jeans using a brush, such as an old toothbrush. Wash the jeans the normal way once you are sure there are no pieces of gum left.

2. Using Vinegar

Vinegar is a versatile household product and its acidic composition will loosen the gum.

Pour vinegar into a bowl. You can use an ordinary kitchen bowl and measure about one and a half cups of vinegar.

Heat the vinegar in a microwave for less than a minute. Alternatively, use a stove if you don’t have a microwave. On the stove, pour vinegar into a cooking pan and heat it for about two minutes.

The Rowenta DG5030 Pro Iron Steam Station produces lots more steam than other irons, guaranteeing you great ironing results in a shorter time!

Features of This Iron

  1. Variable steam – you can choose between vertical and horizontal steam, depending on what you are ironing. You can also use the variable steam controls to adjust steam output.
  2. 33-ounce water tank – allows for up to one and a half hours of continuous ironing.
  3. 1750 watts – ideal for producing the amount of steam you need to remove stubborn wrinkles on heavy fabrics, and large items of clothing.
  4. 12-foot long power cord and 8-foot long steam cord – these two cords are long enough to be kept out of the way when you are ironing, thus preventing accidents.
  5. Steam on demand – a quick flip of the ergonomic trigger gives you a powerful burst of steam when you need it most.

What I like about this iron

  1. First, this iron produces at least three times more steam than an ordinary steam iron, just what I need for ironing heavy fabrics and large items.
  2. Secondly, the pressurized steam from this iron is perfect for pressing sharp creases and smoothing tough wrinkles. I can also use this iron as a vertical steamer to refresh my dry-clean-only garments and drapes.
  3. Thirdly, the 33-ounce water tank saves me the trouble of having to do frequent refills in the middle of my ironing. Once the tank is filled up, it can last up to one and a half hours before it needs a refill.
  4. I also love the way the stainless steel soleplate of this iron glides smoothly across my fabrics without causing burn marks, sticky spots and stains.
  5. Lastly, with the easy to use control panel, I can adjust the temperature and steam output settings to match the kind of fabric I am ironing.

Any Cons?

  1. Some users have noted that steam sometimes explodes out of the iron, while others have noticed leaking from the sides of the iron.
  2. Other users noted that this iron does not have an automatic shut off function, so they must be careful to switch it off when it is left unattended.

Questions Asked

Question: Can I turn the steam function off?
Answer: Yes, you can, adjusting the steam controls to the desired output (i.e. no steam) or not pulling the steam trigger.
